Fred Retires

Long-standing member of chambers Fred Powell has announced his retirement. Fred is set to enjoy a well deserved rest and leaves with the best wishes of all at Regent. A celebratory event to mark the occasion was well attended by colleagues, clients, family and friends.

Oliver accepts tenancy offer

​Oliver Lycett has accepted our offer of tenancy and becomes a full tenant from today. We're delighted that Oliver has joined the team after completing his pupillage with flying colours. A detailed profile of Oliver's practice can be found on our 'People' page.

New Video-Conference Suite

We've recently opened a dedicated Video-Conference Suite in order to improve digital conference facilities. Clients that would like to take advantage of video conferencing can schedule meetings via Skype or other service providers by arrangement.

There's a warm welcome from everyone at Chambers to Oliver Lycett who has recently commenced a twelve month pupillage. Oliver has previously worked at both the Crown and Magistrates' Courts in Staffordshire.

Grenville Jay and Professor Barton are to present a paper at the Society of Legal Scholars Conference at St Catherine's College, Oxford in September 2016. The paper is entitled "Transparency and the publication of judgements : Legislation by the judiciary?"

Paul & Kirstie become joint Heads of Chambers

Paul Cliff and Kirstie Moore have been elected to serve as joint Heads of Chambers following Barry's retirement. Both Paul and Kirstie were called to the bar in the early 1990's and are long standing members of chambers.

Sadly Barry Cliff has announced his retirement as Head of Chambers. We would like to place on record our thanks for his 16 years as Head. We hope he can now relax a little and spend more time working on his barn in France.

Welcome Liz

We're pleased to announce that Liz Copper has made a successful start to her twelve month pupillage at Regent Chambers, which is due to be completed in February 2017. Liz was previously the Staffordshire correspondent for BBC news.

Mediation help desk opens

18 November 2015

Staffordshire Mediation has opened a contact desk at Stoke Combined Court Centre to answer any questions about the new family law process. A trained mediator from Regent Chambers will be available each Wednesday from 10am - 4pm. The desk can be found on the ground floor inside the main entrance.

Landlaw : New Section 8 & Section 21 Notices

There has been recent significant change to Section 8 & Section 21 Notices. Should you serve an incorrect notice, your possession claim may be struck out. Please contact us if  you are a landlord requiring advice or assistance in relation to the new procedures.

Our academic door tenant, Professor Chris Barton, has published an article in this months edition of Family Law. Entitled "Hitchings, Humanists and Hells Angels: railroad, steamboat, river or canal" the article considers the 2014 Discussion Paper concerning non-religious weddings. Family Law subscribers can find the article at page 792.

A Big Welcome to Emma

We're pleased to announce that Emma Burton has successfully completed her twelve month pupilage and has accepted an offer of tenancy at Regent Chambers. Emma had previously undertaken a degree at Staffordshire University and is a Trustee for Staffordshire Women's Aid.

"CLOCK" - Time for Justice

21 January 2015

Members of Regent Chambers are to attend the Launch event for the Community Legal Outreach Collaboration Keele ("CLOCK") on 30th January. The innovative scheme is intended to address the problems caused by the reduction in the provision of publically funded legal services. The event will be addressed by Lord Justice Ryder and other leading figures promoting access to justice. 

Crewe player acquitted

17 October 2014

The Crewe Alexandra player Ryan Colclough has been found not guilty by a jury following a three day trial before the crown court. The winger had faced allegations of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, racially aggravated assault and threatening behaviour but was acquitted unanimously on all counts. He was represented by Paul Cliff of Regent Chambers.

Grenville Jay's lecture to members of North Staffs Law Society on data protection will take place at The Potter's Club, Station Road, Stoke-on-Trent. The informative (but informal) talk will take place on 23 September between 5 - 7 pm.

Data Protection Talk

A member of Regent Chambers, Mr Grenville Jay, has been invited by the North Staffordshire Law Society to talk about minimising any potential problems that relate to data protection and the use of laptop and tablet computers. The talk is due to take place in September on a date and venue to be confirmed. Full details are to be announced shortly. 

 

Family Law Seminar

The Family Law Group are hosting a FREE SEMINAR for practitioners on 29 April 2014 from 4.30 - 6.30pm. The venue will be The Potter's Club, Federation House, Station Road, Stoke-on-Trent. Attendance will be worth two hours CPD. Whole Life Tariffs

18 February 2014

The Court of Appeal upheld the the right of judges' to impose 'whole-life' tariffs in cases involving the most serious offenders. The decision followed an appeal by Lee Newell against a whole-life sentence imposed in September 2013 after his second conviction for murder. The Court had been invited to take account of the recent European Court of Human Rights ruling in Vinter. Counsel from Regent Chambers, Paul Cliff, represented Newell as part of the original trial and appeal team.
