Long-standing member of chambers Fred Powell has announced his retirement. Fred is set to enjoy a well deserved rest and leaves with the best wishes of all at Regent. A celebratory event to mark the occasion was well attended by colleagues, clients, family and friends.

We've recently opened a dedicated Video-Conference Suite in order to improve digital conference facilities. Clients that would like to take advantage of video conferencing can schedule meetings via Skype or other service providers by arrangement.

Grenville Jay and Professor Barton are to present a paper at the Society of Legal Scholars Conference at St Catherine's College, Oxford in September 2016. The paper is entitled "Transparency and the publication of judgements : Legislation by the judiciary?"

Paul Cliff and Kirstie Moore have been elected to serve as joint Heads of Chambers following Barry's retirement. Both Paul and Kirstie were called to the bar in the early 1990's and are long standing members of chambers.

Sadly Barry Cliff has announced his retirement as Head of Chambers. We would like to place on record our thanks for his 16 years as Head. We hope he can now relax a little and spend more time working on his barn in France.

Staffordshire Mediation has opened a contact desk at Stoke Combined Court Centre to answer any questions about the new family law process. A trained mediator from Regent Chambers will be available each Wednesday from 10am - 4pm. The desk can be found on the ground floor inside the main entrance.

We're pleased to announce that Emma Burton has successfully completed her twelve month pupilage and has accepted an offer of tenancy at Regent Chambers. Emma had previously undertaken a degree at Staffordshire University and is a Trustee for Staffordshire Women's Aid.

Members of Regent Chambers are to attend the Launch event for the Community Legal Outreach Collaboration Keele ("CLOCK") on 30th January. The innovative scheme is intended to address the problems caused by the reduction in the provision of publically funded legal services. The event will be addressed by Lord Justice Ryder and other leading figures promoting access to justice.

The Crewe Alexandra player Ryan Colclough has been found not guilty by a jury following a three day trial before the crown court. The winger had faced allegations of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, racially aggravated assault and threatening behaviour but was acquitted unanimously on all counts. He was represented by Paul Cliff of Regent Chambers.

The Court of Appeal upheld the the right of judges' to impose 'whole-life' tariffs in cases involving the most serious offenders. The decision followed an appeal by Lee Newell against a whole-life sentence imposed in September 2013 after his second conviction for murder. The Court had been invited to take account of the recent European Court of Human Rights ruling in Vinter. Counsel from Regent Chambers, Paul Cliff, represented Newell as part of the original trial and appeal team.
